Labor welcomes the ACCC’s win today over domestic airlines, securing court-enforceable undertakings to ensure airlines’ refund policies and practices comply with Australian Consumer Law.

This is a significant win for Australian consumers and – as people fly home for the holidays to see their loved ones – it could not have come at a better time.

No longer will Australian consumers have to accept they can’t get a refund for their delayed flight and no longer will Australian consumers be forced to pay an administration fee to get their money back.

Shadow Minister for Consumer Affairs, Madeleine King MP, applauds the ACCC for their efforts.

“Australian’s don’t always know their consumer rights when they’re faced up against large corporations,” said Ms King.

“The ACCC continues to demonstrate the importance of strong, effective institutions in protecting Australian consumers’ interests.”

And, in even better news, the changes will be applied retrospectively. This means if you were recently refused a refund on your delayed flight, you may now be entitled to one.

The ACCC has published new guidance to help consumers understand their rights in relation to flight delays and cancellations.
